The same negative pressure in the chest discussed as the cause of gastric reflux causes a drawing of a large volume of blood from the right or pulmonary side of the heart and overfills and stretches the thin walled right atrium out. This same overfilling of blood in the right atrium also occurs when the left side of the heart can’t pump enough blood seen in congestive heart failure. In an effort to reduce the fluid volume and relieve the congestion the right atrium releases a hormone (BNH) that causes the kidneys to dump fluids and the suffer has to get up during the night to urinate multiple times. This is often mistaken as prostate problems in men.
