Worn Teeth
Worn teeth are evidence of forces the body could not resolve.
Teeth that are flattened, chipped, thinning at the edges, or developing small cracks and notches near the gumline are often telling a story. They are visible evidence of forces the jaw system has been managing — sometimes for years.
Healthy teeth are remarkably durable. When they begin to wear faster than expected, it usually means the forces acting on them have become greater than the forces they were designed to withstand.
Where the Forces Come From
The jaw muscles are among the strongest muscles in the body. When they repeatedly generate excessive force — often through clenching or grinding during sleep — the teeth absorb the load.
Those forces are frequently a compensation for something else: an effort to protect the airway during sleep, a response to jaw instability or a changing bite, the aftermath of trauma, or long-standing muscle tension. In other words, worn teeth are often a symptom, not the starting point.
As teeth wear, they become shorter and provide less support for the jaw. Less support can mean more strain on the jaw joints and muscles — which can, in turn, drive further wear. Understanding this cycle is central to addressing it.
Looking Beyond the Teeth
Rebuilding worn teeth without understanding why they wore is likely to be temporary. Our evaluation looks for the source of the forces — the bite, jaw support, breathing during sleep, tongue function, and muscle activity — so that any restorative work has a stable foundation.
When restorative or orthodontic treatment is appropriate, it often becomes a later step, once the underlying forces have been reduced — not the first one.
Our Goal
The goal is not only to protect or restore the teeth. It is to reduce the forces that were damaging them, so the result can last.
Teeth rarely wear without a reason. Our job is to understand the reason before rebuilding what it damaged.
